1. Results May Vary

There are hundreds of options to choose from, none of which accurately describe what you will do on a daily basis. Did you know that the famous Dr. Oz was scolded by the FDA for promoting weight loss products with unsubstantiated claims? Yes, even Dr. Oz, who seemingly has your best interests at heart, is not being honest about the incredible commitment involved.

If your business is not growing as fast as you would like, you might desperately search for business coaches promising you that you can earn 6 figures in 1 month, or quit your job in two weeks. While these claims are just as sexy as Dr. Oz’s promises, they might not live up to the standards, either. Not to mention they are often targeted to indecisive or struggling women who know that they are meant for greatness. If only they knew what that was!

When you get down to it, neither diets nor businesses sell the inevitable promise of long hours worked doing small tedious tasks while banging your head against a wall until you finally seem to be getting somewhere. Much of what you have to learn is trial and error, since everyone has a different objective. As if that isn’t a punch in the face, how about the notion that each body and business react differently? You know, the famous “results may vary” disclaimer?

2. Action Trumps Thinking

You are so good at reading, researching, and reviewing disparate theories that you are paralyzed by inaction. You tell yourself that you can really start once you have x. It doesn’t matter if x is unattainable at this point, or whether you have any idea how to get x. What matters is you found another reason NOT to start.

I have talked to so many women who say they are completely ready to start TODAY, but then find reasons to disappear after we lay out a road map. The funny thing is, most of what you need to know about weight loss is plain old common sense. I don’t need to tell anyone to eat more vegetables or get off their butt once in a while. Calories in, calories out may be cliché, but that doesn’t mean it’s rubbish.

The same can be said of business owners who have built a basic foundation to get rolling, but don’t ask their customers for the sale because they need another certification, another program, or a newly revised website.

You are enough, ladies. Just get started!

3. Seek the Right Partners

The law of attraction is real. For business owners just starting out, they attach themselves to industry icons, so that clients are clued into their business philosophy. Or, they lean on joint venture partnerships to expand their audience and grow their reach. I have presented on the platform with National Speaker’s Association Certified Speaking Professionals, which means that I am hanging out with some pretty cool peeps.

When it comes to weight loss, you can bet that Jillian Michaels, Tony Horton, and Bob Harper are household names. Even if you don’t know these people on a friendship level (i.e. stalk them on social media), you are seeking their proven methods that have allowed thousands of others to succeed.

Who you seek to challenge you depends on where you are currently, and where you want to be in the future. Choosing the right path is just as important as choosing the right partner to share the path with you.

I’m no Jillian Michaels. But, I am an accountability partner and cheerleader who experienced first-hand what it feels like to be fat-shamed and how to rise above it with a plan that has treated me right for over 15 years.

4. Eat What you Kill

The number one problem that leads to failure is often not lack of results. The number one cause of failure is lack of quick or extreme results. You can gorge on the spoils of amazing short-term success, but will it sustain you through a drought?

Anyone can follow a 30-day, 60-day, or 90-day plan. Fewer can handle any time period beyond that. The benchmark for maintaining weight loss hovers at one year. According to the National Weight Control Registry, thousands of successful stories are able to maintain their weight loss if they have reached their one-year anniversary since they lost the weight.

Maintaining a daily, consistent plan for 6 months or more is a good indication that you are replacing old habits with new ones. The longer you stick to your plan, the more likely you will be compensated with awesome success!

The same holds true for business owners. You can slap up a YouTube channel and became an overnight sensation, become a featured Huffingtonpost writer, or get thousands of Periscope hearts. None of this matters if you have not established a consistent strategy to both keep the momentum going and support the empire you’re creating. I’m not sure if there’s a proven period of time that determines whether an entrepreneur will sink or swim, but there are plenty of FB ads telling us it can happen overnight. Hmm…sounds too good to be true.

5. You Don’t Believe

On November 2, 2012, just one day before my birthday, I got a phone call from Lisa. Those were dark times- I had recently lost my job of 10 years and couldn’t even comprehend why! As an emerging speaker and brand-new blogger, I was determined to catapult this tragic job loss into a dream career.

Lisa was that 3am phone call for me.

OK, it wasn’t really 3am. Lisa was a writer at First for Women magazine, which is a national print magazine with over 4 million readers. I went from being an unemployed nobody who was crying into her pillow at night to a superstar getting her hair and makeup done for a photo shoot about my weight loss transformation.

The funny thing is- it had been 10 years since I lost 100 pounds. It never once occurred to me during that decade to talk about how losing weight drastically impacted my quality of life. The sad truth is- I never really believed in my own success, even 10 years after it was a DONE DEAL.

As a business owner, are there days when you feel like a fraud? When you keep talking about how you improve peoples’ lives, but are barely scraping by in your own life? Maybe you doubt your ability to close the sale, or own your value?

Repeat after me: I BELIEVE IN ME. Say this when you wake up, in the car, during lunch, during your workout, when you grocery shop, chaperone your kids all over the city, and when you go to bed at night. Let your belief be the first and last thing you cherish every day.

I believe that you have the power to create health in your life. Do you?
