Our topic and speaker: Patient Advocacy with Ashton Nesmith-Kochera

Bio:

Ashton Nesmith-Kochera lived out her childhood dream by becoming a teacher before a genetic, chronic illness forced her to question her purpose.

It was the traumatic pregnancy, childbirth, and NICU experience with her daughter that ultimately led to Ashton’s passion and career in patient advocacy.

In 2009, Ashton received her Birth Doula certification, and in 2018, she became a Board Certified Patient Advocate. She is also trauma-informed.

Through Ashton’s independent patient advocacy practice, she helps bring peace-of-mind to her clients by helping them navigate the complex healthcare system. She specializes in chronic illness (including high-risk pregnancy).

Ashton speaks on behalf of CampaignZERO: Families for Patient Safety and is a legislative advocate on behalf of The National Patient Advocate Foundation. She is also in the process of writing her first book and has co-authored 3 other books, which are all in regard to patient advocacy.

Originally from Williamsport, MD, Ashton, has lived in Spring Mills, WV with her family for 11 years. She has a 14-year-old daughter and a 15-year-old step-son. They keep her on her toes and are a constant reminder of what life is all about.

Ashton enjoys spending time with family and friends. She finds peace while camping (in our camper ????), spending time at our family’s place at the river, or simply reading a good book. She is all about non-fiction, enjoys documentaries, and storytelling. If it's not real, she has a hard time staying interested. Well, except for Disney and Emily Giffin Novels!
